NaNoWriMo a'go'go

It's taken awhile but here I am, risen once again from the ashes.

The last few months of my life have seen an upheaval of epic proportions, everywhere I looked I found Negativity and Disarray. For along time I thought these two vicious fellows were my only friends. I even accepted their very special brand of evil as acceptable.

I am pleased to say after hiding in my cave, dousing myself in self pity and flagellation, and then licking my wounds clean, I have bounced back.
(Many more cliche's and I'll have to sell this post as a Greeting Card)

I turned the ugly Negativity away from my doorstep when she came knocking, I biffed Disarray around the ears a few times and knocked him into shape and then I crawled out of my cave and greeted my new life with an idea.

Ooh, she says, I wonder what that idea was.
The title of this post couldn't possibly have given it away.

That's right,
after a year full of doubt,
 insecurity
 and
the worst case of writer's block
 (ever!)
 NaNoWriMo
loomed large
and I thought
"Self, why ever not?"
and self thought back
"You're right self, why not"

So I am.

Welcome onboard my NaNo 2011 challenge.

The ship has already sailed, if you want to catch it, you'll have to swim through shark infested waters in a tropical rainstorm with 10 kilo's of precious metals strapped to your back and a swag of flies buzzing around your head, but you know, it will be worth it.

How to land your dream job in 3 easy steps...

so excited
image sourced from picsneed

Step 1
Decide what it is you love, study long and hard for approximately 15 years (anything less than that will deem you a flaky fence sitter)  and become so obsessed with the idea that everything else in your life fades into insignificance.

Step 2
Prostitute yourself - your skills, your wares, your time and your family (if they have stuck around during the time of obsession that is) - all over the world via FaceBook, Twitter, Google, Blogger, Wordpress, MySpace, YouTube and every other social media site available. Make connections, acquaintances, contacts, followers and friends with anyone who has the remotest connection to your hearts desire.

Step 3
Start applying for professional positions, realise you have nothing more than your FaceBook friends list to back up your claims and then meekly ask the kindest loveliest of these friends if they could possibly act as a referee.  Wait anxiously in front of computer (meanwhile ignoring husband and children's plea for dinner)for said friend to ignore you (this may take several days of pining, but don't worry, you'll eventually get the idea).  When message comes through only a few short minutes later, you realise perhaps you should have more faith in your esteemed colleagues ;)

OK so it's way more than 3 steps...

Step 4
Click on message in trepidation of the big blow off, only to be pleasantly surprised by...

!!!!A JOB OFFER!!!!
(***3 days later realise forgot to submit application for original job but are still so excited, you just don't care!)

Step 5
(yeah yeah, yeah, so sue me, I can't count.)

Dance around kitchen in velour tracksuit and Ugg boots like the fashionista that you are, squealing and giggling while previously mentioned husband and children watch on in bemused amazement.

This is me declaring it from the rooftops

I, Tanya Bell, (yes ME!!!!) have recently been appointed first

Hungry for more...

Katniss & Peeta - who will you choose?

The Hunger Games

There's no denying I am a huge fan of YA, I also love SciFi and SpecFic and everything else considered slightly nerdy. I have no excuses to offer for being so late to the game. I can only say -
 I am HUNGRY for more!!!!

I have just now finished reading the first book in
and I am HOOKED.

Katniss Everdeen is my new teen hero, the Peeta and Gale love triangle has set my heart yearning and if I could sink a lethally spiced syringe into President Snow's fleshy white neck I would do so with pleasure.

The Capitol is so not the kind of place anybody would want to live, the Games are a sick twist in a warped dystopian nightmare life and District 12 sounds as depressing as soggy socks in a snow storm, but man alive - sign me up!

Like any great work of fiction there are faults to be found and criticisms to be made, but I am going to surpass them all. My blood is still pumping from the exhilarating adventure of the Games and I am still gripping the edge of my seat in a hovercraft flying high over segregated landscape of Panem to come down to a level where I may want to shoot that feeling with a silver arrow through the heart.

Now that I have that off my chest
I am off to seek out the second book in the trilogy,

The love affair we call writing...

Over the weekend I was fortunate to spend time away with the girls. Amongst the clouds in a mountain chalet we talked, laughed, cried, drank and ate. My cheeks hurt from smiling and my heart is warm with the kind of love only girlfriend's can supply (my liver is a tad sore too but don't worry mum, it's water all the way from here).

A wonderfully nurturing child/husband free weekend was had by all and amongst the tears and laughter a few insights and epiphanies were revealed...

On Sunday morning one of my favourite girl's, MermaidMeg, sat us down and gave us all a tarot card reading: some were funny; others spot on and mine - well take a look for yourself.

Tarot Reading - 10 card spread.
1. The Signifier - Ten of Swords - The darkness before the dawn.

2. Crossing CardThree of Swords - A painful state that does not allow for blindness to continue.

3. On The Surface - Three of Cups - Seeking emotional connections / new beginnings.

4. Crux of Issue - Four of Pentacles - Let fears of self go to unblock creativity and allow confidence to flow.

5. Past - Queen of Wands - The superwoman - Let go of the ideal.

6. Future - Ace of Pentacles - The release of past energies will make way for success and prosperity.

 image sourced tarotoftrees.com
 7. Development - Death - Something must come to an end, new life by letting go of old.

8. Response from others - Ace of Cups - Outpouring of feeling, upsurge of raw emotion.

9. Hopes and Fears - Ten of Cups - On going contentment and permanence in the realm of the heart.

10. Outcome - Two of Cups - The beginning of a new relationship or project, renewal of one that has undergone difficulty.

What this means to me...
At first glance this reading appeared to be about my personal relationships with actual real humans. I contemplated for a moment running off to have a wild, passionate affair with an incredibly handsome man that would cook, massage and serenade me (all in that order) but then I remembered I loved my husband, our children and our life together - and considering my question was directed at my writing career - I was forced to look deeper.

Now I think many a writer would agree with me when I say writing a novel is like embarking on a love affair. It is euphoric one moment and the next you are swept into the depths of despair only to be lifted up again by a chance encounter with a new character or a stunning moment of clarity. My journey as a novice novelist would slip into this descriptive concept without missing a beat.

As you may be aware, I have struggled recently to attempt the fifth edit of my MS. The reason I have struggled is because I have decided after 3 years work that I do not like the final product. This is a somewhat crushing revelation and  I have even contemplated (deep breath) giving up!

And I am loath to say I have also flirted with new characters in entirely new worlds. These flirtations have given me the rush I was missing, the glow of first love, but alas I found myself staring out over the mist covered mountains and yearning for my first love.

With that in mind
I took a second look at the Tarot reading. I think it is clear that I am indeed wallowing in the depth of darkness and it has come as a great sigh of relief to know the dawn is coming (insert here a song and dance routine from a really bad but nostalgic 90's music video).

I was already beginning to toy with a new concept for the old manuscript and I have even spent the last month breaking the story down scene by scene and re-plotting several characters journeys.

My MysticTarot has given me faith in pursuing this course of action and I would like to say, as a writer, to all other writers, you have to take inspiration where you can get it - oh and having a little faith in yourself helps too.

To blog or not to blog?

The Quest
You aim to become a published author. You intend to do this by finishing your first manuscript and then either self publish or query agents/publishers (or simultaneously do both).

I "plan" to finish my first YA paranormal series, The Silken Threads, and  then self publish the first three books in e-book format while simultaneously querying agents/publishers.

The Quandary
Your days are too short to do all the things required of you as an author in these new technological times? You need to write; blog; interact; write some more; edit; network; research; comment; be funny and engaging; and perhaps you have to work or parent or occasionally sleep.

Although, I cannot say my days are too short. My days are looooong. I rise with the children, long before the sun wakes, and I retire long after the moon shines. Most nights I get six hours sleep: not too shabby for some, pretty poor for others. I make lists and I schedule routines. I achieve an awful lot in one day. But...

I never seem to achieve what it is I set out to do.

Take this blog for instance.
I have three days a week to write. I aim to do a short blog post on each of those days to kick start my writing day. I even went so far as to declare my intention in the banner line of this blog! Do I end up writing a blog post on each of those three days? Nu-uh.

Today is Tuesday, I am only just now posting Mayhem&Madness!! Where did Monday go? Lost in the madness I assume.

The Query

Do you or do you not continue down this blogging path?

You call yourself a writer. You have several writing projects on the go, non-fiction and fiction alike, and you have numerous other writerly activities happening in the sidelines: blogs; websites; critique partners; writer's group; book club; competitions etc...

You have taken the first steps toward a writerly career and now you need to finish your books and sell them.

To do this in today's market place  you know  you must secure a loyal following of like minded writers and readers to support your journey and for you to likewise support theirs. You have taken the first steps to do that but now you are faltering.

There are so many other things that need doing, like the final edit of Book 1, and more often than not these things take priority over the blog. And sometime you get stuck in the wide world of webbing that is social media and you find your entire day has been eaten up by a big hungry blog spider.

How do you break through the cycle?
How do you get better at juggling all of these things?

I don't have an answer to provide you that you don't already know. I too am stuck in the webbing.
I am tempted to suggest giving up on sleeping, or eating and cleaning.

Unreasonable solutions aside, the best I can come up with is this:

You practice.
You write.

And you blog about practicing and writing in a funny engaging way that will entice like minded readers and writers into following your journey and hopefully they will stick with you long enough to eventually buy and read your book- when at last you get it up and out there!

Just know -- you are not alone...

Happy Blogging

How to be the change you want to see in this world.

Mayhem & Madness
Watching the news is like watching the latest apocalyptic horror movie. The recent images coming out of Japan were heartbreaking. Christchurch has barely caught its breath. Queensland is still crying.

All of this and its only March!
No-one can deny that the Almighty One has taken up a mighty pen and is re-writing the rule book in a mighty fashion. This Earth we live on is unhappy and quite clearly fed up. The Earth beneath our feet is screaming to be heard.

Are we too busy finding the next big thing to listen?
This is an era of entertainment overload. We live to be entertained. We can't stand boredom. There is an worldwide epidemic of Entertainment- itis. To capture our attention the Earth has taken our obsession with entertainment to a whole new level. Now we sit glued to our television, computer, iPad and watch in horror as destruction reigns.

But what next?
What more can we do at this late stage?

As writers we have the perfect medium.
Independent publishers are compiling disaster relief anthologies, writers groups are organising auctions, and well known authors donating in kind. All this has got me thinking about the purpose of fiction writers on this earth.
Who is writing?
What are they writing about?
When is the right time to write about this?
Where are the stories?
Why should we write them?
Fiction is many things: it can be insightful; it can be humorous; it can be scary; it can be sad, happy or mad; but first and foremost it is entertaining. In times of crisis people turn to their coping mechanism.
I have always turned to books.
Some turn to television.
Others film.
Or music.
Alcohol.
Drugs.
In other words  ENTERTAINMENT!

A contribution to the solution.
Are you ready for it? Hold on, it's a biggie. So...
There are plenty of people who read, right? And there are plenty of people in crisis, yeah?
Fiction can deal with the big issues, yes? Fiction can make you re-think long held beliefs, agreed? Stories are Entertaining? YES!

Alright then - what are you waiting for?
Tell an entertaining story that will capture the worlds imagination and BE THE CHANGE.

As for me:
Apocalyptic and post apocalyptic narratives; utopian dreams and  dystopian nightmares; supernatural themes and inspirational objectives always take centre stage.
My first novel is a inspirational utopian dream combining supernatural themes.
My second novel is an post apocalyptic dystopian nightmare of epic proportions.
I wonder - can I bring the two styles together for my third?

What about you?
Do you know of an author that is changing the world, one story at a time?
Could you?

Is self publishing the new agent slush pile?

Is Self-publishing the new Slush Pile?
There is much debate in the literary world about e-books vs. paper; self publishing vs. traditional; quality vs. crud and so on and so forth.

3 big ticket news items
Three things happened in the publishing world recently that fired this debate further:
- self publishing guru and author Amanda Hocking excepted a traditional publishing deal;
- traditionally published bestselling novelist Barry Eisler turned down a reported $500 000 dollar deal to go it alone, and
- the federal judge rejected the Google book settlement.

Is it possible?
Is it possible that both traditional and self publishing can co-exist in a complementary relationship? The above news items indicate a definitive yes. Each path suits a particular need; one path can lead to the other and around and round the publishing wheel we go. But - will self publishing will emerge to take on the role of the agent in the first round of queries?

In times gone by...
The steps you once would take to become published were:
• You write a book
• You fine tune it to the best of your ability
• You research agents, publishing houses and competition that suit the genre
• You send out queries, the first 3 chapters or enter competitions
• You wait
• While you wait you start to write another book or perhaps fine tune the first one
• You wait some more
• After a very short /very long time you land an agent, publisher or win a comp
• You start on the rewrite
• Your agent sends the novel around to be optioned by publishers
• You wait
• While you wait you blog about waiting and other publishing things
• Sometimes you land a deal, sometimes you find a new agent, sometimes you write another book
• You wait some more for covers, pre-releases, reviews so on and so forth
• 12 to 18 months after landing the deal your book is released
• Glory lands at your feet, you jump for joy and then you get back on the wheel.

The future of publishing as I see it
• You write a book.
• You fine tune it to the best of your ability.
• You have a few friends, critique partners and beta readers fine tune it further.
• While others are reading first book, you write some more.
• You interact on social media about the experience.
• You e-publish the first book via one of the many platform services available.
• You set realistic and affordable price for e-book ($0.99 to $2.99).
• You try not to think about the realistic and affordable price.
• You reassure yourself - everyone else is doing it.
• You make it available on Kindle, iPad, Kobo & Nook.
• You target a few book reviewers and offer them free arcs.
• You see the dribbles of sales come in.
• You get excited.
• You do the whole process again with the second book.
• More sales dribble in.
• You blog some more.
• Sales increase.
• You get excited and madly publish another three books.
• You get a bit of a cult following.
• You start making reasonable money.
• A few agents notice you on Twitter.
• An agent or two likes you on Facebook.
• A big name agent blogs about you.
• You consider traditional publishing.
• You query a few agents.
• Agents respond positively.
• Your name is already known so you land a traditional publishing deal.
• You don't really know the first thing about traditional publishing so....
• You land an agent to help you out along the way.
• You become a mega-success old school style.
• You decide you like traditional publishing but you miss the freedom of self-publishing.
• You consider self publishing as a side project.
• Your side project is a huge hit and your traditional published deal sky rockets because you are so damn popular.
• You have landed feet first in your very own Utopia.
• The beginning meets the end and the end becomes the beginning.
• A perfect circle.
• You get back on the wheel.

Agents and traditional publishers do not get lost in the new order.
These entities are still necessary because:
1. People still love paper books (well, some people), and
2. Authors want to write, not publish (well, some authors).
The way I see it is that writers need to make it happen for themselves. Get out there and get noticed. Climb out of the slush pile.

Self-publishing platforms could become the new agent slush pile.
Agents will look out for new talent in a new way. Publishers will look for new writers that already have following and proven track record. Traditional publishing will fine tune the best of the best and make them the GREATS.
That's the way I see it. How do you see it?

*for an awesome post on the numbers and money making side check out ex- literary agent and new author Nathan Brandsford

**note -I am yet to attempt of the above mentioned publishing options. This is just me making sense of the world as I see it and putting together all the info I have gathered over the many months I have been researching the best way to publish my first, second, third and fourth novel. Watch this space though...

Mayhem & Madness - So Write

Today I am
 FREE
to do what I want
any old time.

Okay, so not quite any old time:
strictly between the hours of
9.30am -2.30pm
Monday, Thursday & Friday.

But still -
after 4 years of full time
University
and 5.5 years of full time
Mothering...

3 half days a week is like,
sunshine on a cloudy day, or
wine at the end of a long day, or
peace instead of war
(not that I'm comparing Thing 1 & 2 to a war zone...)
but you get my drift.

To further discredit myself and abuse all cliche's
(I promise this will be the last)
Today is the first day of the rest of your life.

So Write.

From this day forward
I am officially no longer a student,
My children are no longer in my care 24/7 [sob],
I have no other pressing matters to attend to.
I have no other excuses not to.

The only thing I can describe myself as today is,
wait for it,
drum role please,

 da dada daa daaaa...

an unemployed stay at home mum aspiring to be the world's next big thing,

A Writer!

How bout you, can you clear the decks?

MondayMadLibs - Nov 15

Ahh it's Monday again and MadLib's is upon us.

Before we start, I thought we'd get to know each other a little better. There are many things about me 'to know but the first thing I will share is the things that are short in my life.My height for one is short, my patience for another. My will power is often short lived as is my attention span. My fingernails are short and the shortness of my skirts catch many an eye. I am short on time and more often than not short of coin. My grammar falls short of the mark as does my maths, the time spent on housework is kept short and I specialise is baking shortbread.Do you get the picture?

Good, now that is out of the way I wont feel so bad in saying, today will be a shorty, which suits me just fine.

Today's MadLib will blossom from Kate Grenville's 'The Writing Book' exercise 1.9 - Use the first sentence from a piece of writing you like for your opening line.

The writing I like this morning is Nicholas Sparks 'The Notebook'. The line is -

'Who am I? And how, I wonder, will this story end?'

I particularly feel this line, the opening line of the novel, suits Jax down to a tea.

***

'Who am I? And how, I wonder, will this story end?'
'I beg your pardon?'
_________ Jax looked up from her _______ in the ________. The sun blazed behind Frank's head, throwing his _____ up the embankment making him appear like a _______. Jax stifled her giggle, Franks face was a________but the tone of his voice _______. 'Sorry.' Jax mumbled.

'What do you you mean, who am I?' Frank hoisted her up under her arms and marched her across the sand. The mouth of the crude hut Triton had fashioned under the palm trees yawned at them. Crossing the threshold Frank sat her firmly on a mat of palm fronds and paced back a forward in the small space. The walls of the hut barely stood a metre tall and the highest point of the roof pitch was only inches above Jax's head so Frank had to __________. Jax stifled another laugh, he looked like a __________. The _______of Knotted Palms! Jax cheeks burst and her laughter spluttered out in hysterical fits. Frank froze on the spot. His face went the same shade of purple as the dead corpse that lay under the sand a few hundred feet into the rain forest. That thought pulled Jax up short. 'Sorry.' she mumbled again.

Frank took a calming breath and started pacing, a sure sign he wanted to tell her something of importance but couldn't figure out how. Jax waited. Frank paced. This went on for sometime. Jax soon got bored and
started fidgeting. She picked at the quick on her nail. It tore away from her chewed fingernail with a hot painful sting. '____!' She sucked madly on her finger as Frank stopped short again.
'Don't use that language Jax. It's not ladylike.'
'Oh what, and strangling a double agent with my _________ is?'

Frank sighed. 'I know how you must be feeling. It's not nice the things we have to do...'
'That's an understatement!'
'Okay, you're angry. I get that. This is not what you signed up for. I get that too,' he squatted bedside her and took her face in his hands, 'I'm sorry it has come to this.'
'Hrumph' Jax turned her head away, shrugging him off. The funny  had left the dingy hut and depression waltzed back in. Jax tried to shut out the gloomy, sad cloud but it swallowed her whole.
'Now is not the time to give up.' He pulled her face back forcing her to meet his eye, 'the story is not nearly over.'
'You don't get it Frank.'Jax pushed him away and stood up, 'it's pointless. I will never find my father!'

'Your father?'
'Yes! That's why I joined your stupid little mission impossible. I don't care about politics, I'm 17 for Pete's sake! What do I care who runs the country, they're all ego maniac _________ anyway. I just wanted to find my dad. I have searched this country high and low, I have double checked your stupid list of Agents, I have rescued half of them, lost  some of them, seen two of them killed and now I have killed one! And not a damn one fits my mum's description!'

'Your mum told you what he looked like?' Frank paled at her attack and stepped back.
'What? No she didn't tell me what he looked like, if she had this would be a whole lot easier wouldn't it?'
The colour drained back into Franks' face, 'What did she tell you then?'
'Nothing! That's the problem. All I know is he was a Agent working for a top secret government agency in the early 90's. He met her in the city in 92, they fell in love, she fell pregnant and he ran like hell.'
'Oh right. And now you're looking for him?'
'Duh!'Jax rolled her eyes.
'Well then,' Frank cleared his throat and relaxed, 'I can assure you, none of the men on that list were in the city in 92.'
'Then who the fuck am I?'

Mayhem&Monday - November 8

Routine, Routine, Routine, the madness of the day begins - ten years ago I never would have imagined that so many things could be achieved before 8am. Not only is it possible to run 3 kms before breakfast; it seems it is also possible to make love to husband; submit a job application online; do 3 loads of laundry; unload and re stack both drawers of a dishwashers; empty every bin in the house; take out the recycling; feed the worms; feed Things 1 & 2; mend 3 story books and vacuum the floors. Phew!

And now to writing. On this fine Monday morn our MadLib will blossom from Kate Grenville's 'The Writing Book' exercise 1.6 - Describe a character. You will find MadLib at the end of this exercise.

Once again we will be exploring the character Jax from my WIP @jax #theinceptionofchaos
*first draft
**jax excerpts may or may not appear in chronological order and may or may not make the final cut.

The Grenville Exercise - Without trying to think of a story, describe a character. Sex, age, race, occupation, appearance, mood, city, country, inside, out, rich, poor, weather, alone or with others, surroundings, family, schooling etc

Luca- pronounced Lu-sah. Tall large man, muscular and lithe like a lion and capable of crushing small animals in his giant sized fists. In his early forties he is as camp as they come, his voice is high and light and he has a tendency to giggle like a school girl. He has never had a relationship with anyone other than his mother and he is flattered easily and has a weakness for feisty young women who need help. He is a hit man for hire and he owes a small debt to Agnes and is working it off at her hideout as a butler / thug. He dresses impeccably in dress shirts and linen pants with a frilly white apron over the top to protect his expensive attire. His demeanour is unusually friendly which works in his favour more often than not, people trust him. He grew up in a small country town, loved by everyone and hated by many more. His mother was a successful business woman, strong and feisty but screwed one too many people over and eventually succumbed to heart failure due to high stress levels. His debt to Agnes is not of the monetary variety, Luca has more than enough money to support himself. He doesn’t particularly care for Agnes's attitude particularly her attitude toward his lifestyle choices but prefers not to get into an argument with her- he knows what she is capable of as he has been known on occasion to be the deliverer of her bad news. Although people gravitate toward him he has a hard time keeping friends due to his occupation, he has three degrees including a masters. His father was never around and he hopes one day for the man to reappear but seeing as he has absolutely no idea who the man is that is highly unlikely. He has no other family and is lonely although he would not admit it. Oh and he is also in love with Gregor. Jax and he have sooooo much in common, and he love love loves her!!!!

Now describe the same things about a second character - no need for them to have anything in common with the first. Now connect these two characters.

Nix- Male, 50 something, Caucasian, short,  compact, muscular, fit, graying hair, soft baby face, kind blue eyes, nice full smile, gentle voice. He is a little bit devilish, fast witted, loyal and intelligent to boot.Nix is friendly to a fault but also little bit weary, he looks over his shoulder a lot more than he would like and living on the edge does not sit as comfortably with him as he would have others believe. He is a southern boy and likes the hustle and bustle of the big city, the quiet country air makes him nervous and jumpy and he hates the hot humid weather up north. His parents are still alive, although quite old and senile, and he has a vibrant family life back down south that he would prefer to be near but circumstances of his marriage to Agnes keep him away. On the outside he portrays a confident and happy demeanour, only those that pay close attention see that he is longing for something else. He is very good at his job and it is with his help that has allowed Agnes to be as successful as she is. As a spy he is reasonably well off, not rich, not poor. He has made sure his parents are comfortable in their retirement and his sisters need not worry about money. He prefers company to being alone and this has led him to be somewhat dependant on Agnes. For the most part he and Agnes have a good relationship, he is one of the only people she will listen too although recently she rarely pays attention.

Do they know each other, if not do they meet, how? If they do how, related, love, hate, accident, proximity.

Luca and Nix are familiar with one another. Nix likes to keep himself separate from the people Agnes employs to do her dirty work but he does do a thorough background check on everyone. Nix knows about Luca’s past, his mother’s death and the fact that the man blames the government for not protecting her from bad investments and dodgy underworld figures. Luca thinks nothing much of Nix, he sees him as Agnes’s beck and call boy and thinks he has no spine. When Agnes orders Luca to get rid of Nix Luca thinks it will be a breeze.

Is there something that is important to them both, an object, desire? Do one of the five senses predominate? What is the mood?

Surviving Agnes is important to them both- Nix because he loves her, Luca because he owes her his life. Agnes rescued him from a spiralling life of crime that would have seen him dead before his 40th birthday. Both men are big aftershave users and neither likes the others scent. They dance around each other, sniffing the air in disgust and largely ignore each other.

Write a page in which these two characters interact.

And now to regale ye with the a MadLib
***
'Close the door behind you,' Agnes snapped.
Luca gritted his teeth on the way out, if she wasn't ____ he would tear her ____ off and serve it on a platter.

Meet Jax - the fictional heroine driving this blog

See, I told you, average.

If someone asked you to describe Jax, the first thing you would say is ‘Oh you know, she’s average looking’ and she wouldn’t mind because it’s true.

She’s average height, if a little on the short side, 162cm, not tiny but not tall. Slim but not skinny nor chunky, light brown hair bleached by the sun. Her mum used to say it was honey blond but that was before she was hit by a bus and killed instantly in front of Jax and the entire school. When Jax is feeling down she talks to her mum and remembers the nice things she used to say. Jax would murder me for telling you that!

Anyway her eyes are sometimes green, sometimes grey and sometimes blue, depending on her mood and the time of day. She has straight-ish teeth, a few freckles, a normal sized nose, average smile, and an average figure.

The second thing you would say is ‘Be careful’.

Your listener would probably cock their head to the side and inquire why? You would lean in real close, so your lips are almost brushing their ear. With a quick look over your shoulder to make sure Jax was not around you would say in a hushed whisper, ‘She hears and see’s everything!’

Now, don’t get me wrong, Jax is not nosy, you would reassure your listener, no not at all, in fact she tries her hardest not to pay attention— she just can’t help it.

You see she has 20-20 vision and 100% hearing accuracy, acute attention to detail and a memory to boot. Her mother would tell her she inherited it from her father; he was a mysterious spy working for a top secret government agency. Not that Jax would know him if they bumped into each other on the street. He shot through on a mission long before Jax arrived and he hasn’t been heard from since. Jax’s mother died before Jax had a chance to wrangle any further information out of her.

In a strange twist, Jax actually enjoys her talents but hates the attention people pay to them. Determined to find her father – dead or alive as it may be – Jax really wishes everyone would leave her alone and let her get on with it – people rarely do.

Jax is not the kind of girl that blends into a crowd. If the things I’ve already told you don’t make our average girl stand out, then her smart mouth, clumsy demeanour and quick wit certainly make you sit up and take notice. Kids in school flock to her, parents love her, teachers have tried (and failed) to tame her, and most interesting - the government has their sights set on her.
